Look, I know there are a lot of contenders.
Some people will say Breaking Free.
Others will say Bet On It (and honestly, the golf-course drama deserves respect).
A few brave souls might even argue for Scream.
But I’m here to tell you that the greatest song in the entire High School Musical franchise is I Don’t Dance.
First of all, it’s a song about not dancing.
In a musical.
Let that sink in.
The entire premise is basically:
“I don’t dance.”
Immediately performs an extremely choreographed dance routine.
Secondly, it gave us Ryan Evans’ finest hour.
For two films he’d been dismissed as “Sharpay’s brother,” and then suddenly he turns up on a baseball field looking cooler than everyone else combined.
Thirdly, the song has absolutely no right to be as catchy as it is.
I dare you to listen to it once and not spend the rest of the day singing:
“I don’t dance…”
“I know you can…”
And finally, it perfectly captures what made High School Musical so much fun.
It’s ridiculous.
It’s dramatic.
It makes no sense.
And somehow it works perfectly.
Even now, nearly twenty years later, I still grin whenever it comes on.
So yes, this is my official position.
The best High School Musical song is I Don’t Dance.
And if you disagree, meet me on the baseball field.
We’ll settle this with jazz hands.
