My brain REFUSES to accept that some of these songs are not from the actual Y2K era.
Exhibit A: Daphne & Celeste – “BB”
Released: 2018.
Emotional release date: somewhere between the Bubblegum Club newsletter and me begging my mum for glitter gel pens in Claire’s Accessories.
It SOUNDS like:
💖 inflatable furniture
💖 frosted lip gloss
💖 CBBC presenters yelling over slime graphics
💖 a song playing while a girls’ magazine advertised a free butterfly hair clip set
Other songs with “wait… THAT wasn’t from 2003?!” energy:
✨ “1985” – Bowling for Soup
✨ Half the Hannah Montana soundtrack
✨ Basically anything that sounds like it belongs on a NOW CD next to Crazy Frog
Some songs don’t just sound nostalgic…
They sound like they arrived pre-loaded with a tamagotchi and a polyphonic ringtone. 🤣📱
Honestly? The Y2K aesthetic never died. It just put on platform shoes and came back louder.
