Before Spotify algorithms and “add to playlist,” we had:
- CDs
- cassette tapes
- and pure determination 💅
You didn’t just hear a song back then — you WORKED for it.
📻 Sitting by the radio waiting for your favourite song
🎙️ The DJ talking over the intro like a personal attack
⏺️ Hitting RECORD too late and missing the first line
😭 Accidentally recording the traffic report after Everybody in Love
And somehow every cassette ended up called:
“BEST SONGS EVER!!! VOL 6”
written in glitter pen with at least one spelling mistake.
Then there was the emotional rollercoaster of buying a new CD:
✨ staring at the album cover all the way home
✨ reading the lyric booklet like sacred text
✨ playing Track 1 fifty-seven times before accepting the rest of the album existed
Also:
- portable CD players skipped if you blinked
- the NOW That’s What I Call Music albums raised an entire generation
- one rich friend had speakers “with bass”
- taping songs off the radio felt like organised crime
Streaming is convenient…
but 00s music listening had ✨drama✨.
