There was a very specific era of the internet where YouTube felt like the Wild West.
No algorithms protecting us.
No content warnings.
No “are you sure you want to watch this?”
Just vibes… and deeply questionable decision-making.
And for some reason, as children with full internet access and zero supervision, we saw a video titled “DO NOT WATCH THIS” and thought:
“Well now I simply have to.”

Why was everything so dramatic???
- “THIS VIDEO WILL HAUNT YOU FOREVER”
- “YOU WON’T SLEEP AFTER THIS”
- “ONLY THE BRAVE CAN WATCH”
And we were like… I am 11 years old and absolutely the brave one actually.
Spoiler: we were not.
🩸 The Fake Scary Videos That Felt VERY Real
Looking back, they were probably made on Windows Movie Maker with dramatic sound effects…
But at the time???
Fully convinced we had just witnessed something illegal, cursed, or both.
And yet… did we click another one straight after?
Of course we did.

🐭 The “This Looks Like Kids Content… Wait… Why Is It Like That??” Videos
You clicked for something innocent.
A cartoon.
An animation.
A cute character.
And then suddenly:
- The vibes shifted
- The music got weird
- Something felt… off
And you just sat there like:
“I don’t think I’m supposed to be watching this.”
But did you click off?
No.
You rode it out like a soldier.
💔 The Random Emotional Videos That Ruined Your Day
Why were we watching:
- Sad slideshows about friendship 💔
- “If you don’t cry you have no heart” videos
- Emotional edits set to the most devastating songs known to mankind
For what???
You came for a laugh and left questioning life at age 12.
🤨 The “Educational” Videos That Were Low-Key Cursed
Some of those “facts” videos???
Not facts.
Not educational.
Not okay.
Just deeply unsettling information delivered in a calm voice like that made it better.
👀 The Moment You Realised the Internet Was… Not Always Safe
There was always one video.
The one that made you pause and go:
“Oh… this place is a bit unhinged actually.”
And somehow… we just carried on using it like nothing happened 😭
✨ Final Thoughts (aka: why were we like this??)
We were unsupervised.
We were curious.
We had absolutely no survival instincts when it came to clicking links.
But also???
It was kind of a shared experience.
We all saw things we probably shouldn’t have…
and somehow turned out (mostly) fine.
