There are many reasons you might get sent to the headteacherās office in primary school.
Fighting. Swearing. Causing chaos.
Me?
I got sent⦠for body spray.
Now in my defence, this wasnāt just any body spray.
This was peak 00s, personality-in-a-bottle, āthis is who I am nowā energy.
One innocent spritz. Maybe two.
Okay, maybe a confident spritz.
Next thing I know, Iām being marched off like Iāve committed a full crime.
Apparently it was ādisruptive.ā
Apparently it was ātoo much.ā
Apparently⦠I was āchallenging.ā
Which, looking back, is such a classic teacher word for:
āShe had personality and we didnāt know what to do with it.ā
And honestly? They werenāt wrong.
Because at that exact point in time, I had fully decided that
Daphne and Celeste
were not just a band⦠they were a lifestyle choice.
If chaos had a soundtrack, I was living it.
Fast forward to now, and my mum randomly bumps into my old headmistress in a hospital waiting room.
āHowās Asten?ā she asks.
And my mum, without missing a beat:
āGood. Sheās getting married.ā
No context. No build-up. Just straight to the headline.
Apparently I āused to be⦠challenging.ā
Used to be?? š¤£
Because hereās the thing.
That same āchallengingā energy?
- the opinions
- the personality
- the slightly chaotic confidence
- the need to express myself
It didnāt disappear.
It just⦠grew up with me.
Now Iām a writer.
I use my voice for actual things.
Iāve built a life I genuinely love.
And yes⦠Iām getting married.
The girl who got sent to the headās office for body spray
is now planning a wedding.
Still a bit chaotic.
Still full of personality.
Just⦠slightly better at where I spray things. š
