Novelty pop songs get a bad reputation.
They’re usually remembered as silly, pointless, or “not real music” — which is funny, considering how many of us can still sing every single word years later.
In the 00s, novelty pop was everywhere.
Songs about food. Songs about dances. Songs that existed purely because someone thought, “This would be fun.”
And honestly? They were.
Acts like Fast Food Rockers weren’t trying to be deep or cool. They weren’t chasing credibility. They were chasing joy — loud, colourful, unapologetic joy.
Novelty pop didn’t ask you to analyse lyrics or feel something profound.
It asked one thing only:
“Do you want to have fun right now?”
And most of the time, the answer was yes.
These songs were perfect for:
- kids’ TV playlists
- school discos
- bedrooms with the CD player on repeat
- moments when you just wanted to sing without thinking
No pressure.
No seriousness.
No irony required.
Looking back, novelty pop feels very of its time — pure early-00s optimism, where pop music was allowed to be ridiculous without apology.
And honestly? I think we could use a bit more of that energy now.
Sometimes a song doesn’t need meaning.
It just needs to make you smile.
