There was something special about being a CBBC kid. Not just the shows — though Tracy Beaker, Raven, Tracy Beaker Returns, Dick and Dom in da Bungalow, Smile, and the glorious Blue Peter chaos are reason enough — but the whole vibe of it.
It was bright. It was a bit awkward. It was full of heart.
CBBC didn’t talk down to us. It spoke to us — like the slightly chaotic friend who always had glitter on their jumper and a weird snack in their pocket. You could laugh at Stitch Up, get emotional at Jeopardy, and then immediately shout “Bogies!” with your mates on the playground.
It was a whole personality before social media even existed.
When I think of CBBC, I think of coming home from school, kicking off my shoes, and catching that yellow logo flashing across the screen. I think of Smart teaching me creativity, Byker Grove making me think, and MOTD Kickabout somehow sneaking in life lessons with football clips.
And even now, all these years later, something about it still lives in me. That mix of silliness and sincerity. The joy of learning things the weird way. The feeling that growing up didn’t have to mean growing out of things that made you happy.
So yes — I’m an adult now, but deep down, I’ll always be a CBBC kid. Still curious. Still emotional. Still slightly too invested in who won Raven. 💛
