From My Memory Box: The Day I Wrote a Song (With My School Mates)

This post is part of From My Memory Box — a series where I open the lid on the personal memories that shaped who I am today. The little things that still glow softly in my heart.

The Memory

I can still picture it — that jumble of lined paper, blunt pencils, and big ideas. We were maybe eleven or twelve, sitting cross-legged on the classroom carpet, convinced we were about to become the next S Club 7.

Someone hummed a random tune, someone else scribbled lyrics about friendship and dreams, and suddenly it was our song. It didn’t rhyme properly, the rhythm didn’t make sense, but it was ours. The teacher even let us perform it at the end of the day, which in our minds meant instant fame.

We sang like we were on Top of the Pops, hands waving, giggling between lines, hearts racing with the thrill of being creative together. Looking back, it was so pure — just a bunch of kids who believed music could make anything possible.

Why It Stuck

That day was the first time I realised how much I loved creating something out of nothing — words, melodies, stories that didn’t exist until we dreamed them up. It wasn’t just a silly school project; it was a spark.

The same spark that would later lead me to writing books, blog posts, playlists… all of it. I didn’t know it then, but I was already chasing the same joy I still find every time I sit down to write — that little rush of, “wait, what if we made this?”

If You Remember This Too…

Did you ever write a song at school? Maybe for a talent show, a music lesson, or just because you and your friends thought you could form a band? What was yours about?

Daisy’s Note: The world clearly wasn’t ready for our chart-topping hit, babes — but we were iconic anyway. 🎤💅
