Ah, the school disco… sticky floors, glitter tops, awkward slow dances, and the DJ blasting tunes we screamed along to with zero clue what they were actually about. Looking back now, half the lyrics were absolute chaos 😳😂
1. Macarena – Los Del Río (1993)
We thought: silly arm dance!
Reality: a whole story about a girl cheating on her boyfriend with two of his mates. Pure telenovela drama hiding under those claps and spins.
2. Boom Boom Boom – Outhere Brothers (1995)
We thought: just shout “WAYO!” really loud.
Reality: an unfiltered anthem that had no business at a Year 6 disco.
3. Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! – Vengaboys (1998)
We thought: party bus fun and bright colours.
Reality: “If you’re alone and you need a friend…” 👀 say no more.
4. Mambo No. 5 – Lou Bega (1999)
We thought: counting girls’ names was maths revision.
Reality: “a little bit of Sandra all night long” … sir, this is a village hall.
5. It Wasn’t Me – Shaggy (2000)
We thought: funny catchphrase song.
Reality: detailed cheating confessional with verses we thankfully couldn’t keep up with.
6. Livin’ La Vida Loca – Ricky Martin (1999)
We thought: exotic and exciting!
Reality: full on fling chaos, lipstick “the colour mocha” and nights that would get us grounded for life.
7. 2 Become 1 – Spice Girls (1996)
We thought: romantic swaying with your crush.
Reality: the girls were literally singing about safe sex. Innocence shattered.
8. I’m a Slave 4 U – Britney Spears (2001)
We thought: cool snake dance.
Reality: …the title says it all. And yes, this got school-disco airplay 😅.
Daisy says: “Honestly babes, we were out here in sparkly trousers doing the Macarena while accidentally learning about infidelity. Peak 90s/00s childhood!”
✨ Which of these did you scream the loudest at your school disco, totally oblivious? Drop your answers below — no judgement, we were all in it together 😂
