So I’m minding my business, vibing to Kesha’s TikTok (as you do — 2010s anthem, no skips). And then it hits that iconic line:
“Don’t stop, make it pop.”
Normal people: Yasss, party anthem!
Me, ex-balloon-phobic child: Flashbacks. Absolute war flashbacks. 🎈💀
See, once upon a time, balloons weren’t fun party décor to me. They were pop hazards — unpredictable, lurking, waiting to betray me with a random BANG. The fear was real, babes.
So when Kesha drops that line, my brain doesn’t picture glittery dance floors or red solo cups. Nope. I picture Year 7 birthday parties where I strategically positioned myself as far away from the balloon arch as possible. Icon behaviour? Maybe. Survival instinct? Absolutely.
Fast forward to now: I can laugh, bop along, and even dance to the song. But every so often, that lyric sneaks in like, “hey remember your balloon fear era?” Thanks, brain. Thanks a lot.

“Oh babes, Kesha wasn’t singing about balloons, but try telling your trauma that. Imagine clubbing in 2010 and ducking under the DJ booth like it’s the Blitz every time she said ‘pop.’ PTSD? More like Pop Trauma Stress Disorder. Icon behaviour.”
